Vale Reports Strong Iron Ore Output in 3Q25, Highest Since 2018, as Thompson Operations Remain Steady - AI Generated Image
Mining company Vale S.A., which operates one of its key nickel mining and processing facilities in Thompson, has reported a strong third quarter, driven by record global iron ore production and stable nickel output across its international operations.
In its Third Quarter 2025 Production and Sales Report, published on October 21, 2025, Vale announced 94 million tonnes of iron ore produced globally — the company’s highest quarterly output since 2018 and a 4% increase year-over-year. Total iron ore sales reached 86 million tonnes, supported by robust demand in global steel markets.
While the company’s major growth came from iron ore and copper operations in Brazil, Vale noted that nickel production remained steady at 46,800 tonnes, reflecting consistent output from its Canadian operations, which include Thompson, Sudbury, and Voisey’s Bay.
Thompson continues to play an integral role in Vale’s Energy Transition Materials portfolio — the business unit responsible for producing nickel, copper, and cobalt used in electric vehicle batteries and other clean-energy technologies. The Manitoba operation contributes to Vale’s global strategy to become a leading supplier of critical minerals for the low-carbon economy.
In the report, Vale reaffirmed its commitment to operational efficiency and long-term investments in northern Canada. The company continues to operate in Thompson’s Birchtree and Thompson mines, alongside its milling and refining facilities, which support hundreds of local jobs and regional economic activity.
Vale also highlighted its ongoing portfolio restructuring, including the sale of a 70% stake in Aliança Geração de Energia S.A. to Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) and earlier partnerships with AP Oryx Holdings LLC (Apollo) and MIND ID in Indonesia. These strategic realignments are designed to focus more resources on core mining operations, including those in Canada’s nickel belt.
Nickel remains a critical component of Vale’s clean energy transition plan, with demand expected to grow in the coming years. For Thompson, this stability in production reflects continued strength in the city’s long-standing mining sector and Vale’s role as one of the largest private employers in northern Manitoba.
