November Marks Diabetes Awareness Month: Focus on “Wellbeing in the Workplace” - AI Generated Image
November is Diabetes Awareness Month (Northern Health Region), a time dedicated to raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and supporting the millions of people living with diabetes. This year’s theme, “Wellbeing in the Workplace,” highlights the importance of creating inclusive, understanding, and supportive work environments that empower individuals with diabetes to manage their health and thrive in their careers.
The campaign encourages employers and colleagues to recognize the unique challenges people with diabetes may face at work, including stigma, stress, and limited access to proper care. Promoting open communication, providing healthy food options, allowing flexibility for medical appointments, and fostering awareness through education are key steps workplaces can take to support employees’ overall wellbeing.
Globally, more than 430 million working-age adults live with diabetes, making workplace support a critical component of public health. Locally, the Northern Health Region continues to promote diabetes education and prevention programs throughout Manitoba, including screening initiatives and nutritional guidance.
World Diabetes Day is observed each year on November 14, marking the birthday of Dr. Frederick Banting, the Canadian physician who co-discovered insulin in 1921. His discovery remains one of Canada’s most significant medical contributions to global health.
Throughout November, Manitobans are encouraged to learn more about diabetes, participate in awareness events, and support those living with the condition by fostering understanding in their homes, communities, and workplaces.
