BGC Thompson’s Youth Build Program Helps Young Adults Build Skills and Secure Their Future - AI Generated Image
BGC Thompson’s long-running Youth Build Program is giving unemployed and underemployed young adults in Thompson a fresh start through education, life-skills training, and employment readiness support.
The program, now in its 24th year, works with up to 26 adults aged 18–29 each school year. Participants commit to a 48-week schedule from September to June, attending full time Monday to Friday. Through a partnership with the School District of Mystery Lake, students are registered with R.D. Parker Collegiate and work toward credits, mature student status, or completing Grade 12.
Alongside academic upgrading, Youth Build provides wraparound support designed to remove the barriers that often prevent young adults from re-entering school or the workforce. Participants receive help with housing applications, connections to social services, driver training, résumé development, and job-search preparation. Employment readiness is a core focus, with students gaining the practical skills and confidence needed to take the next step into work or further training.
Funding for Youth Build allows participants to earn income while in class, reducing financial pressure for those who might otherwise struggle to return to school. Staff emphasize creating a supportive learning environment where participants can focus on long-term goals, personal responsibility, and community engagement.
The program is based in Thompson on Treaty 5 territory and welcomes young adults who are unemployed, underemployed, or not currently attending school. Registration for new cohorts is handled directly through the Youth Build office.
