Northern Manitoba Wildfires: Active Fires Decline To 127 As Crews Step Up Heavy Equipment Use - AI Generated Image
Manitoba’s wildfire response continues to show signs of progress, with the number of active fires province-wide dropping to 127. Four fires in the Northern region were extinguished in the last 24 hours.
The Manitoba Wildfire Service reported that 19 units of heavy equipment are now operating in the North, reflecting intensified suppression efforts. As of this date, 417 wildfires have been recorded across Manitoba this year, with more than 2.07 million hectares burned.
Despite these gains, the season remains one of the most severe on record. Evacuations earlier in the summer displaced more than 68,000 people, and 631 structures were destroyed. Two civilian deaths have been confirmed in Lac du Bonnet.
Wildfire researchers have pointed to hotter, drier conditions linked to climate change as a key driver of this year’s severe fire behaviour. Crews continue to monitor and suppress holdover blazes, with additional aircraft and ground resources deployed across the province.
Officials remind residents to stay alert to local advisories, as conditions can shift quickly even when fire numbers are declining.
