Thompson residents should prepare for a dangerous drop in temperature over the next 24 hours, as Environment Canada warns of conditions that can freeze exposed skin in minutes.

While light snow and a biting wind chill of -38 are already being felt today, Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the forecast indicates the worst is yet to come. By the afternoon of Wednesday, January 21, wind chills are expected to hit a severe -42°C.

Immediate Frostbite Risk Health officials warn that at these extreme levels, the risk of frostbite is “immediate”. Residents are urged to cover all exposed skin, as damage can occur within minutes.

The Week Ahead The deep freeze is set to linger. Temperatures will continue to plummet throughout the week, with overnight lows forecasted to reach -34°C by Thursday night.
