Thompson General Hospital Nurses Voting on Whether to Add Facility to ‘Grey List’ - AI Generated Image
Nurses at Thompson General Hospital are voting this week on whether to place the facility on a “grey list” due to ongoing safety concerns. Voting closes on Friday November 21, 2025, at 4 p.m., according to the Manitoba Nurses Union.
Grey listing is used when a union advises its members that an employer is failing to maintain professional standards or provide a safe work environment. While it does not trigger job action, it signals to nurses that they should avoid taking new positions at the affected facility.
The union says safety concerns have been raised for more than a year. A gun was fired inside the hospital’s chapel on December 24, 2024, and a stabbing occurred in the waiting room this past September. Both incidents involved individuals who were not patients but were accompanying family members.
Nurses have repeated calls for improved security at the hospital, including increased on-site officers and other protective measures. A spokesperson for the Northern Regional Health Authority told the Winnipeg Free Press that safety officers are currently stationed at the building, with additional measures under review.
A previous grey listing vote at Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre earlier this year was approved and remains in effect.
