Thompson General Hospital to begin overnight monitored access Dec. 1 - AI Generated Image
Thompson General Hospital will begin monitored overnight access on December 1, 2025, limiting public entry to the Emergency Department doors between 7:00 PM and 6:00 AM, according to a security update released by the Northern Health Region (NHR) on November 24.
The NHR says the change is intended to increase safety for patients, caregivers, and staff at the region’s largest hospital. Beginning Sunday night, stairwell doors and elevators will be locked to the public and accessible only to staff, while management and 24/7 security personnel will monitor compliance throughout the facility.
According to the announcement, all after-hours public access will be directed through the main Emergency Department entrance. The health region emphasized that Thompson General Hospital is not designated as a cold-weather shelter and is not equipped to serve that function.
The shift to monitored access comes during ongoing concerns about safety and staffing at the hospital. In recent months, Thompson General Hospital was “grey-listed” by the Manitoba Nurses Union following several violent incidents and ongoing staffing pressures, though the NHR’s statement did not reference those events directly.
Hospital leadership says patients and families should expect more detailed communication about how the new overnight access system will operate, including any exceptions for essential visitors.
