The City of Thompson is set to launch a Call for Proposals in early winter 2025, inviting submissions for its 2026–2027 homelessness prevention and housing initiatives under Canada’s ‘Reaching Home’ strategy. This federal community-focused program prioritizes innovative local projects that directly address homelessness by preventing shelter dependency, offering stable housing solutions, and producing clear, measurable outcomes within the community.
Since 2012, Thompson has been officially recognized as one of 66 Canadian communities eligible for stable, long-term federal support aimed at substantially reducing homelessness. Administered locally by the City’s Community Entity (CE) in collaboration with the Thompson Community Advisory Board (CAB), Thompson has received and distributed over $1.7 million in Reaching Home funding between 2019 and 2024.
The upcoming Call for Proposals seeks submissions emphasizing creative and effective approaches to homelessness prevention, housing stability, and tangible community outcomes. Projects that demonstrate significant innovation, reduce reliance on shelters, and prioritize individuals at risk of homelessness will receive priority consideration.
Thompson’s local governance bodies, including the Community Advisory Board, will play a crucial role in reviewing proposals and recommending initiatives that best match community needs. Previous successful projects funded by Reaching Home include supportive housing initiatives such as the We-Chi-i-Toh-Kamik project, administered by the Canadian Mental Health Association–Thompson Region, and the Lived-Experience Circle Support, coordinated by the Thompson Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation.
As communities nationwide aim to reduce chronic homelessness by 50% by 2028 under the national objectives of the Reaching Home strategy, Thompson continues to proactively adapt federal funding into impactful local solutions. The upcoming proposals represent another significant step forward in the city’s commitment to ensuring affordable, stable, and dignified housing for its residents.
