Thompson Issues Ice Safety Warning Nov 25 After Northern Drownings - AI Generated Image
The City of Thompson issued a critical safety advisory on November 25, 2025, urging residents across Northern Manitoba to stay off waterways due to dangerously thin ice conditions caused by mild fall weather, following two recent fatal drownings in the region.
The warning comes after RCMP responded to separate incidents over the weekend in Norway House and Cross Lake on November 22 and 23. The drownings claimed the lives of a 44-year-old man and a 47-year-old man. A third incident involved the rescue of a 72-year-old woman.
Officials advise that ice is currently not as thick as usual for this time of year because of warmer than average temperatures. People engaging in outdoor activities are strongly cautioned to avoid waterways.
The notice provided specific guidelines regarding ice strength. Ice under four inches thick is insufficient to support a person. At least five inches is recommended for a single snowmobile, 8 to 12 inches for a car or small pickup, and 12 to 15 inches for a medium pickup truck.
The advisory highlighted that ice is usually weakest along edges and in the center of waterways. River ice is noted as particularly hazardous due to flowing water beneath the surface. The city advises anyone unsure about ice thickness not to take the risk.
