Thompson Wildfire Update: Progress Made as Fire Held North of Radar Tower
Thompson emergency crews are reporting encouraging progress in the ongoing wildfire response north of the city. As of 7:30 p.m. on July 5, the fire near the NavCan radar tower has been held throughout the day thanks to the extensive use of air support and heavy equipment.
Dozer crews completed significant clearing around the radar dome, while value protection sprinklers were deployed at Mystery Mountain Ski Hill and are now running to safeguard major infrastructure in the area.
Despite the progress, officials noted that the eastern edge of the wildfire remained highly active, with flames pushing eastward. The fire has jumped the Burntwood River, as confirmed by updated satellite imagery shared by the City of Thompson.
Wind conditions are expected to remain favourable overnight and into Sunday, with lower intensities than those recorded in the past two days. This shift offers emergency teams a critical opportunity to continue fire mitigation efforts and enhance protective measures.
Emergency response teams, including personnel from Thompson Fire & Emergency Services, Vale, and provincial wildfire agencies, are actively preparing for Sunday’s operations. Multiple agencies are expected to maintain daily coordination as the wildfire evolves.
Residents are reminded to stay informed and be prepared in case conditions shift. Updates will continue as more information becomes available.
