In a landmark collaborative initiative, Thompson, Manitoba, has unveiled its new Community Safety and Well-Being (CSWB) Action Plan. The extensive strategy was developed with input from more than 20 local organizations, spanning government, Indigenous groups, education, healthcare, social services, and law enforcement, to holistically address critical social issues such as addiction, homelessness, youth crime, and systemic inequities.
The Action Plan outlines targeted interventions across six primary areas: Integrated Alcohol Management, Demand on Police Resources, Community Inclusion, Systemic Inequities and Racism, Housing and Homelessness, Youth-involved Crime and Harm, and Built Environment and Social Infrastructure. This integrated approach is designed to unite various agencies and resources, creating comprehensive solutions to complex community challenges.
An Advisory Committee co-chaired by Inspector Damon Werrell of the RCMP, Dee Chaboyer from MaMowWeTak Friendship Centre, and Sonya Wiseman from the City of Thompson, guided the development of the plan. The initiative was heavily informed by community input, including a significant survey conducted in 2020 that garnered over 2,200 responses, nearly 16% of the city’s population.
The CSWB Action Plan signifies a proactive shift towards collaborative problem-solving and community wellness, aiming to build a safer, more inclusive, and resilient Thompson for all residents.
